Power BI Training Case Study

Learn how we helped an international retailer create, design, and implement Power BI training for its staff.

The Context

Our client is a large international retailer that owns and operates a variety of stores across the globe.

From candy and confectionery shops to restaurants to bookstores, our client’s business portfolio is incredibly diverse.

This results in enormous amounts of rich and diverse data.

The Problem

The large retailer recognized that it was time to upgrade its business intelligence processes in order to maintain its competitive advantage in the marketplace. Improved data accuracy, data timeliness, and data availability were key outcomes the company wanted to achieve.

Once we understood our client’s goals and objectives, we recommended an investment in Power BI, Microsoft’s prominent data analytics platform.

The business decided to follow our advice and purchase Power BI. Our team helped implement the product, which included data architecture and data modeling work.

We then helped our client create a variety of well-designed and highly informative reports and dashboards for their different user groups and business needs. While we were wrapping up this work, the organization was faced with a new challenge:

“How do we train our staff on Power BI? And how do we do so in the most efficient manner?”

Our company was tasked with solving this problem as well.

Power BI Training – The Solution

Our client wanted Power BI training that was not only comprehensive but also clear and easy to digest.

The training, whatever the form may be, needed to cover a majority of the company’s newly created Power BI reports and dashboards, as well as a few other miscellaneous topics.

We decided to create written training documentation for the organization based on the situation and feedback we gathered over the course of the project.

Our plan was to create documentation that would be as concise and clear as possible without sacrificing important details and information.

Lessons Learned

Well-written training documentation is an incredibly effective way for many businesses to train their staff on a particular technology like Power BI.

The material should always be easy to digest, distribute, and update.

Our company provides Power BI training in a variety of ways (Dashboard in a Day hands-on workshops, video recordings, documentation, etc.).

For this large international retailer, documentation proved to be the best route.

If you’re looking for training documentation around a particular technology like Power BI, we highly recommend your company:

  1. incorporate an iterative process fueled by great feedback and input
  2. ask for the training material to be as concise as possible, without sacrificing quality
  3. if multiple pieces of documentation are required, ask for formatting consistency and uniformity
